An Overview of Branson, Missouri

For many music lovers in the mid-west and southern States, the town of Branson, Missouri is the ideal vacation spot. Because of its long history of live musical entertainment and its abundance of theaters, Branson is often called the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

Branson began as a small settlement in 1882 when Rueben Branson opened a general store and post office in the area and Branson, Missouri became an official place on the map. However, Branson wasn’t formally incorporated until the April of 1912. Tourists were drawn to the area after a popular book called Shepherd of the Hills by Harold Bell Wright was published. The book tells about that particular area of the Ozarks and its settlers. After its publication, tourism in Branson was born.

During the 1950s and 60s, several family bands came to Branson and started live musical shows, which was the beginning Branson’s current reputation as the live musical entertainment capital. Two of the first were the Presley family and the Baldknobbers music show. Today Branson has over 52 state-of-the-art theaters which host all kinds of year-round entertainment including music, magic, comedy, and theater. All different genres of world-renown musical and performing artists make Branson a regular stop in their tours. Branson is also home to several of these artists.
